Atlantic Youth Brass Day 2021
Join Dr. Bryan Appleby-Wineberg, Dr. Jason Sulliman, Tom Hutchinson and members of the National Champion Atlantic Brass Band in a Virtual Brass Day!!! This dynamic afternoon will include masterclasses and technique classes to boost your playing skills to new levels! The event will culminate in a 7 p.m FREE concert featuring the Atlantic Youth Brass Band and Rowan Youth Orchestra. Join us for an outstanding FREE afternoon of brass playing, technique and more!

Digital Audio Workspace 1 for Students
Description: In this class you will learn the basics of Digital Audio Workstations. You will learn the elements that makes up a DAW and also learn how to be “DAW Agnostic” (how to understand the similarities and differences across all DAW’s and how to quickly pick up a new one through mutual terminology). You will learn how to record audio into a DAW (guitar/vocals/synthesizer/etc) and how to record MIDI sections (drum tracks/piano tracks/synth tracks/etc). You will come away feeling confident that you can record your basic ideas.
Technical Requirements: MIN REQUIREMENTS (for ALL classes): Ableton Live and/or Logic X (Both Ableton and Logic X after 90 day free trials that are fully/almost fully functional. MAC OR PC with at least 8 GB of RAM, i5 processor or better. Computer should be no older than 2013 (some exceptions may be made) A keyboard (musical) with MIDI capability.

Musical Theatre Audition Workshop
Description: Learn strategies to refine and ace your next musical audition, whether for school, community theater, or summer programs! Students will combine character study, acting technique, and musical expression to polish a 32-bar cut for audition. Emphasis will be placed on character development, musical expression, and vocal technique to create competitive auditions. Now is the perfect time to refine your approach for your next audition! This is a free masterclass open to 8 students. All students must be accepted (as per audition) to allow participation.

Description of the Samba Module: This 3-day workshop for music educators will provide a quick practical survey of musical elements found in the Samba musical tradition typical of the Southeast Region of Brazil, especially in cities of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. Participating educators wil be introduced to Samba through singing and performing traditional songs and rhythms. Along its performance, each concept presented will explore practical applications and suggestions for incorporating them into classroom activities. Participants will learn about further resources on this music, including recordings, score repositories and method books. One may choose to attend only one independent session, though it is highly recommended to attend the entire Samba Module.
About the series: The “Brazilian Music in the Classroom: applied concepts” is an ongoing professional development opportunity to discover Brazilian music and explore its possible applications in the classroom. The series takes participating educators through the rich traditions of Brazil, exploring the richness of the music from all regions of the Country, including the well-known Samba, Samba-reggae and Baião, to the lesser known ijexá, Maracatu and Bumba-meu-Boi rhythms. The series is imagined as a tour through the different musical traditions, from the South, Southeast, and Center-West, to the Northeast and North regions of Brazil.
Session 1: Brazilian Samba: basic concepts
This session will explore some basic musical concepts as related to the Brazilian Samba tradition, from the southeast region of Brazil. Participants will be led through and learn a few simple Samba songs – lyrics and melodies, basic rhythmic structure and basic clapping patterns, along with suggestions of possibilities for use in the classroom. Topics discussed in this session include: the 2/4 measure in samba, phrase of 16 minimal values, emphasis on beat 2, clapping patterns, and a few circle samba songs.
Session 2: Brazilian Samba: developing a learning context
This session will further explore and develop musical concepts as related to the Brazilian Samba tradition from the southeast region of Brazil. Participants will be led through and learn a few simple Samba songs – lyrics and melodies, learn to understand the two ‘sides’ of the phrase structures, and learn a few tamborim and Brazilian guitar rhythmic patterns. Topics discussed in this session include: the two ‘sides’: the 7 side and 9 side, the concept co-metric and counter-metric rhythms as related to samba, the concept of rhythmic imparity, and the additive logic to build horizontal rhythms on tamborim and guitar.
Session 3: Brazilian Samba: advanced concepts
This session will further explore musical concepts as related to the Brazilian Samba tradition from the southeast region of Brazil. In addition to learning a few more rhythmic patterns as played by the 4-string Cavaquinho and repique de mão, participants will also explore variants of samba including Partido-Alto, Samba de Roda and Samba School Samba. The session will finalize with an introductory survey of typical call and response rhythms used during carnival festivities.

Barbara Adams
Barbara is Lecturer Professor at Rowan University teaching Sound Reinforcement and Audio Recording in their Music Industry Program. She also is the booking manager for Rowan Music Group, the program’s record label and artist management services. She is still active in the industry as production manager and FOH engineer at The Locks at Sona, Philadelphia’s premier listening room as well as a freelance Engineer/System Tech for several production companies, festivals, and venues.
As the Soundgirls Philadelphia chapter president, she is always looking for ways to help mentor and guide new engineers in the field of live sound and bring together the Philadelphia community of women in audio.

Ben Runyan
Philadelphia's Ben Runyan is the face of City Rain. As a band City Rain has experienced acclaim for the cinematic music video for their first single, "The Optimist," which in 2013 landed on VEVO's Indie Playlist garnering over 250,000 hits. The track steamrolled through 2014 when the video won mtvU's The Freshmen contest in February, placing it in regular rotation on the network. More recently, City Rain teamed up with MTV again when the song was fittingly featured on MTV's popular reality TV show, Catfish. City Rain’s music has also been featured on Esquire TV, Showtime, and G4TV. City Rain was also nominated for ASCAP’s Sammy Cahn award for best lyrics for “The Optimist” in 2013. City Rain, with Ben at the helm, as performed/DJ’ed with artists like Washed Out, School of Seven Bells, Capital Cities, Class Actress, Robert Delong, Alvin Risk and more.
In the composition world City Rain scores music for commercials and short film. Drawing on various influences, City Rain devises lush ambient textures complimented by melodic piano structures.
Most recently Ben is working on a new record with featuring vocalists (under the alias "J U S T P R O C E S S") while teaching music production at Drexel & Rowan Universities.

Caroline Kubach
Caroline Kubach began guitar studies at the New Jersey School of Music in Medford, New Jersey. She received her Associate Degree in Music at Burlington County College. In May 2015, she graduated from Rowan University, Cum Laude, with her Bachelor’s Degree in Classical Guitar Performance studying with Joseph Mayes. Caroline graduated Summa Cum Laude with her Master’s Degree in Classical Guitar Performance from Rowan University in May 2017. Caroline is also a member of the Pi Kappa Lambda honor society.
Caroline has been called on to perform at various venues in the NJ/Philadelphia area including: Burlington County College, Wilmington Classical Guitar Society, Rowan University. She has also performed in master classes for Christopher Ladd, Rupert Boyd, and Antigoni Goni. In April 2017 she one of the headlining performers at the Women of the Guitar Festival in Buffalo, New York. Along with performing a concert, she also gave a masterclass, judged a competition, and was part of a round-table discussion.
Caroline performs in an award winning classical guitar duo, Dulcet Guitar Duo. They have performed numerous times at Rowan University, at local events, for the Wilmington Classical Guitar Society, and for the Philadelphia Classical Guitar Society. They were also invited to perform at the 2016 NJMEA Classical Guitar Festival. Dulcet Guitar Duo has performed in master classes for SoloDuo, Christopher Ladd, and Celil Refik Kaya. They were also was recently awarded First Place in the Texas A&M University Guitar Ensemble Competition.
Caroline is the Artistic Director of The Philadelphia Classical Guitar Society, a member of the Wilmington Classical Guitar Society, and a member of The Guitar Foundation of America. Caroline has been teaching guitar, bass, and ukulele lessons for seven years. She is also an Adjunct Professor of Guitar at Rowan College at Burlington County.
Atlantic Brass Band's Annual Youth Brass Day

Open to all school-aged brass players. Youth Brass Day includes rehearsals, sectionals and an exciting side-by-side concert with the Championship Atlantic Brass Band. Bring your own bag lunch, pizza will be provided for dinner before the 5:00pm concert.
This is the perfect way to try playing in a brass band before committing to our Atlantic Youth Brass Band in spring semester.
