Biography

Bruce Erwin began playing the violin shortly after his father began making them. Since he began playing, he has performed in the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, the Canton Symphony Orchestra, the A.I.M.S. Orchestra in Graz, Austria and La Orquesta Sinfonica de Xalapa in Mexico. From 1992 to 2017, Bruce taught in Ohio, most notably at the Oberlin Community Music School in Oberlin, Ohio and the Beck Center for the Arts in Cleveland, Ohio. Discovering the Ohio Scottish Games caused Bruce to develop an interest in traditional celtic music. He compiled and edited a collection of fiddle tunes from the Scottish tradition called The Fiddler’s Wrist, published by FJH Music in 2003.

Bruce holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Iowa, where he was a member of the Graduate String Quartet. His Master of Music degree was earned at Baylor University, where he was a grad. assistant and also performed in the Graduate String Quartet. He has completed coursework and two of four recitals for a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of North Texas, where he was a studio teaching assistant. His relationship with the Suzuki Method began by being a student in one of John Kendall’s first demonstrations for the Texas Music Educator’s Association. He has taken and registered short term teacher training courses in all ten books, working with Yuko Honda, Sr. Pat D’Ercole, James Maurer, Alice Joy Lewis and Mark Bjork . He has taught in music camps sponsored by Northern Ohio Youth Orchestras, Suzuki Music Columbus, DFW WOW and Campamento Musical Juvenil de Panamá.

Mr. Erwin resides in Cherry Hill with his wife Joanne and Kirby, the dog.
