AWL Criteria
Creative activity
Creative activity should be related to the candidate’s discipline (as outlined in the Department T&R & Promotion documents). Broadly outlined, these activities include conducting, composition, choreography, dance performance, design, theatrical performance, theatrical directing, theatrical producing, musical performance, and music production. The standards for evaluating the merits of creativity activity include: 1). the time/effort required for the project should equivalent to the time/effort required for the equivalent course load; 2). the work’s artistic merit and value within the field; and 3). the challenge/growth for the applicant.
Scholarship
Scholarship in one’s discipline is related to the discovery of knowledge in one’s field of expertise, the integration/synthesizing of knowledge to reveal new patterns of meaning, or the investigation of pedagogy and student learning. The standard for adjusted workload include: 1). the time/effort required for the project should equivalent to the time/effort required for the equivalent course load and 2). the project should have a reasonable expectation of peer reviewed dissemination (i.e. publication, presentation, or both).
Extraordinary
Service Extraordinary service to the department, college, university or profession defined as a contribution above and beyond normal expectations of the faculty member’s terms of employment. Examples include: (e.g., producing professional works; organizing a conference, editing a journal, holding office in a professional organization, heading a departmental accreditation process).
Applicants seeking adjustment for service must make the case for the significance of the project in terms of the university’s mission and/or strategic objectives and demonstrate credibly that the service activity will consume, on average, at least the nine (9) hours per week typically recognized as the investment required to teach a three-unit course.
AWL Guidelines
Tenure-Track Assistant Professors in their first two years automatically receive an adjusted teaching load of three credits per semester. Eligible faculty beyond their second year may continue adjustment in load through the process described in this document.
Minimum
Teaching Load This process cannot be used to remove a faculty member completely from the classroom. In most cases, faculty members are expected to teach a minimum of 2 classes per semester; however, department chairs may apply for adjusted load. All faculty members must teach a minimum of 1 class or at least 3 credits per semester.
Overloads
Tenured faculty members who have received adjusted load may teach an overload course in cases of extreme need for the program. Rationale for overload during an adjusted load cycle must Updated 10/02/2020 be supplied to the Dean and approved before implementation. Teaching an overload course does not abrogate the responsibility to complete scholarly/creative/service work.
Role of the College
Committee By October 1st of each academic year the college will elect three full-time, tenure-track faculty members to the Adjusted Workload Committee. An additional member external to CPA will also be included. Updated 10/02/2020 The college committee is charged with assessing all applications/reports from department members, preparing a report on each application/report containing the committee’s recommendation and a brief rationale, and providing the dean with the applications, supporting material, and appropriate recommendation spreadsheets in the specified format. Committee members will recuse themselves from consideration of their own applications/reports. College committee deliberations may result in a decision to approve the proposal, not approve the proposal, or return the proposal to the applicant for minor changes and resubmission (see appendix for notification letter format). If the college deliberations result in a rejection, the applicant may appeal to the Dean.
Role of the Dean
Applications recommended by the college committee and those not recommended, but for which an appeal has been received, will be assessed by the dean in consultation with the college committee. Following review, the dean will provide the candidate and college committee a notification of status for continued funding (for scholarly/creative/service activity development reports) or future funding (for application), as well as additional feedback. A summary report of college decisions will then be forwarded to the Provost for final approval.
