Biography

Dr. Andrew L. Kaye is an ethnomusicologist who has published on topics in African music, the history of stringed instruments, and film music.  He has lectured on a wide variety of topics in world music, including East and Southeast Asian music, Latin American music, music of the European classical tradition, music and gender, jazz, rock, rap and hip-hop. His articles include “The Guitar in Africa,” “The film score and the African musical experience,” and four chapters tracing the history of modern African music in the book Musica dell’Africa Nera, published by L’Epos (Palermo, Italy, 2004).  Alongside his scholarly interests, he is an avid dancer and teacher of the Argentine tango.  He has traveled to over 80 countries and speaks several languages.  He has taught tango workshops in Trondheim (Norway) and Nur-Sultan (Qazaqstan), and has lectured at Columbia University, the University of Buenos Aires, the University Federal do Pernambuco (Brazil), the National University of Ireland Galway, and the University of Iceland.
