Biography

Mike Massaro is the Coach of the new Rowan Youth Jazz Orchestra. Massaro is a 2020 graduate of Rowan University where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Music Education. Currently, Massaro is the Instrumental Music Teacher at Kingsway Regional Middle School as well as the Hornline Caption Head for the Kingsway Regional High School Marching Band. Previously, Massaro served as the director and music arranger of the Woodstown High School Marching Band for two years and director of the Jazz Band for three years, as well as being a hornline staff member for Woodstown, Kingsway Regional, and Pennsville Memorial marching bands, all while working towards his undergraduate degree full time. In 2018, Massaro marched as a lead trumpet with the Reading Buccaneers Drum and Bugle Corps in their undefeated season, winning a gold medal at Drum Corps Associates (DCA) finals.

At Rowan University, Massaro was a member of the trumpet studio of Dr. Bryan Appleby-Wineberg and studied jazz trumpet with George Rabbai. Through his time at Rowan, Massaro served as a four year member of the university Jazz Band, performing as a lead trumpet and also holding the position of Jazz Band Librarian, allowing him to work closely with acclaimed jazz musician and head of Jazz Studies, Denis DiBlasio. Massaro has performed as a member of the Rowan University Small Jazz Ensembles, Pep Band, Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, and Brass Band. As a trumpet player, Massaro has had the additional opportunities to study and learn from Peter Bond, Wayne Bergeron, Bobby Shew, Tony Glausi, Victor Cummings, Joe Henderson, John Tumminia, and Joey Tartell.
