Biography

Alex Mitchum is a South Jersey-based Jazz Guitarist, and has been studying and performing music for over 15 years. Alex graduated from Rowan University in 2018 with a Bachelor of Music and a concentration in Jazz Guitar Performance and Studies. During Alex’s time at Rowan, he was trained in both Classical and Jazz Guitar styles under the mentorship of Joseph Mayes, Tom Giacabetti, and Brian Betz; and performed in masterclasses for Christopher Ladd, and Rupert Boyd. He was the guitarist for the Rowan University Jazz Band, Lab Band, Small Jazz Ensembles, Classical Guitar Ensemble, as well as Collegium Musicum, Statesmen Choir, and was a featured artist in the 2018 Rowan University Spring Jazz Band concert series with Brian Betz.

Alex has performed in various genres of musical theater throughout the region that have allowed him to hone his skill sets in rock, blues, funk, fingerstyle, motown, swing, and popular music. He regularly performs jazz duos and solo guitar in restaurants, venues, clubs, and corporate events. Alex has accompanied acclaimed artists such as: Rowan University Head of Vocal Division, Marian Stieber, Rowan University Jazz Guitar Professor, Brian Betz, and Motown Singer, Mary Wilson, of “The Supremes”.

As a private educator for the last 5 years, Alex maintains a home studio and teaches at the Rowan Community Music School where he shares his love of music knowledge and traditional/modern techniques teaching guitar, improvisation, and music theory. Alex encourages his students to challenge themselves through ear training, performing, and utilizing available resources to accomplish their goals.
