Biography

Michelle Rosen, principal bassoonist of The Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia since 1997, is a graduate of The Curtis Institute of Music where she was a student of Bernard Garfield. Michelle has appeared as soloist with The Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia on numerous occasions performing works by Villa-Lobos, Francaix, Vivaldi and, most recently, Weber's Bassoon Concerto. In addition to The Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, she has served as principal bassoonist of The Opera Company of Philadelphia. She has been heard in a variety of groups in the Delaware Valley including Orchestra 2001, the Pennsylvania Ballet, the Delaware Symphony and Dolce Suono. Some other notable orchestral appearances have included, the New York String Orchestra Seminar at Carnegie Hall, the Spoleto Festival and the Evian Festival. Michelle has had the privilege of working with such renowned conductors as Sir Simon Rattle, Andre Previn, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Yuri Temirkanov, and David Zinman.

As a chamber musician, Michelle was a founding member of the Zephyros Winds. During her tenure, the ensemble gained recognition by winning the First and Grand Prizes at the 1995 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition (the first woodwind quintet to do so in the competition's 22 year history) and performing extensively throughout the United States and abroad, including the group's New York debut at Merkin Hall in 1997. In addition, the quintet was invited to participate at chamber music competitions in Osaka, Japan and Munich, Germany as well as the Norfolk Chamber Festival as special guests of the New York Woodwind Quintet. Michelle has also appeared as a guest on the Dolce Suono Concert Series performing woodwind chamber music of Samuel Barber and Francis Poulenc. She currently works with students at The Esther Boyer College of Music at Temple University and The Settlement Music School coaching woodwind chamber music.

An active teacher, Michelle has served on the faculties of Immaculata College and Temple University Music Prep where she launched and directed the woodwind chamber music program. Michelle was also a founding member of Da Capo Winds, The Temple University Music Prep faculty woodwind ensemble. She continues to be active with the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra where she conducts woodwind section rehearsals on a variety of orchestral repertoire. Michelle is currently a bassoon coach at Haverford/Bryn Mawr College, a member of the bassoon faculty for Temple, Drexel and Rowan Universities, the University of Pennsylvania as well as the Haddonfield School of Performing Arts.

Michelle can be heard on WRTI 90.1FM during The Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia's radio broadcasts. In addition, Michelle has recorded for Warner Bros., and while at Curtis, recorded for EMI under the direction of André Previn.

In her free time, Michelle loves spending quality time with her sons. She's also enjoys coaching soccer, exercise, bargain hunting and eating sushi.
