Biography

In her next life, Debra Scurto-Davis will be a singer, but in this life, she does hold the second most glorious job in the world, vocal coach and collaborative pianist. After endless hours of practice en route to a Master’s Degree in Piano Performance, Scurto-Davis realized that her primary joy comes from making music with others. This led to a Specialist Degree in Vocal Coaching and Accompanying earned at the University of Michigan with Martin Katz. The New York Times has confirmed that in her role as collaborator she is a "supremely alert, sensitive partner."

Scurto-Davis has devoted a large part of her career to teaching Italian, French and German Diction. She continues her long-term connection with Westminster Choir College where she has spent nearly two decades helping singers to put these languages into their muscles, nurturing a love of text and communication.

Her previous experience as coach/ accompanist includes stints at Des Moines Metro Opera, Sylvan Opera, Baylor University, the University of Michigan and Temple University. At the Shipley School she was a piano instructor for 24 years and co-founded Music Theater Mash-Up, a highly successful summer camp for youth.

She currently serves at Swarthmore College where she was principal vocal coach for the world premieres of The Royal Singer (2015) and Cassandra (2019) as well as music director for many opera scenes programs. She continues to teach at Westminster Choir College and she has joined Rowan University as coach and collaborative pianist. She works as a diction coach at the CoOPERAtive Program and is the principal coach and music director of The Florence Voice Program in Florence, Italy.
