Biography
Before joining Atlantic Brass Band as Solo Horn in 2021, Dr. William Wiegard was Solo Horn, Music Librarian & Personnel Manager with the San Antonio Brass Band since 2016. In their inaugural season competing at the 2018 North American Brass Band Association Championships, San Antonio was named National Champions of the First Division. Later that year, he surprised his colleagues, friends & family by switching exclusively to Tenor Horn & selling his French horn.
Prior to moving to San Antonio, he taught at West Texas A&M University at Canyon; where he was honored with the Excellency in Teaching award from the Regents of the A&M system. As soloist and chamber musician, Dr. Wiegard has performed at conferences, competitions and festivals throughout North America and Europe. He can be heard as principal horn on John Corigliano's Symphony No.3 for Large Wind Ensemble: Circus Maximus and the Grammy award-winning Naxos recording of William Bolcom's Songs of Innocence and of Experience, conducted by Leonard Slatkin.
William earned his Doctorate of Musical Arts in Horn Performance & Pedagogy at the University of Texas in Austin & holds two Masters in Music Degrees (Performance & Chamber Music) from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Born & raised in Iowa, he grew up watching NCAA Iowa Hawkeye Basketball games alongside his Grandma; so naturally he earned his undergraduate degree in Horn Performance at the University of Iowa as a Hawkeye.
