Biography

Xuan (Lily) Wintringham, born in Hunan, China, began studying the flute at the age of ten after four years of violin training. She attended middle school and high school at the Wuhan Conservatory of Music and has been active as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestral player ever since.

As a soloist, Ms. Wintringham made her first professional debut at the Hongming Concert Hall in Hunan at the age of eleven in a performance of Mozart’s Flute Concerto in D Major with the Hongming Youth Orchestra. She has appeared as a soloist with several orchestras, including the Arizona State University Symphony Orchestra, the University of Wyoming Symphony Orchestra, the Fushan Philharmonic Orchestra and the Changsha Institute of Music and Arts Orchestra. Ms. Wintringham has won several awards including the Arizona State University Concerto Competition, the University of Wyoming Jacob’s Concerto Competition, the China Woodwind Competition, the Hunan Winds Competition, and the Chinese Young Artists Competition. Additionally, she was selected to perform in the honor’s convocation of the China Woodwind Competition as the exceptional winner that year. In 2008, she was invited to represent Mainland China in a performance of the “Concert of Chinese Exceptional Flutists of Mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao” in Hong Kong. Furthermore, she was granted the Excellent Musician Award of Xinghai Conservatory in 2009.

As a chamber musician, Ms. Wintringham is a founding member of the Black Lilac Flute Trio. She was also a member of the Arizona Contemporary Music Ensemble, and she performed recitals and master classes as a founding member of a flute and guitar duo. Wintringham maintains an active role in her duo with pianist and composer Ying Zheng, and has toured throughout Southern China with Zheng as well as with her acclaimed flute, violin and piano trio. Additionally, her woodwind quintet “Spring” has performed all over the Northwest USA since their formation in 2009, and her flute quartet served as guest artists at the Hong Kong Flute Academy. Furthermore, she was the principal flutist of Xinghai Conservatory Flute Ensemble in 2005-2009.

As an orchestral musician, Wintringham has held principal positions in numerous professional orchestras, including the Fushan Philharmonic Orchestra and the Pingjiang Philharmonic Orchestra. During her studies, Ms. Wintringham also garnered principal positions in the Arizona State University Symphony Orchestra, the University of Wyoming Symphony Orchestra, the UW Wind Symphony, the Xinghai Conservatory Symphony Orchestra, and the Xinghai Conservatory Flute Ensemble. She has also held substitute positions for flute and piccolo in the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra during the 2008-2009 concert season. An advocate of contemporary music, Ms. Wintringham is constantly working with composers to commission and premiere new works. In 2011, she was invited to collaborate with Pulitzer Prize winner, Jennifer Higdon, in the Western Premiere Tour and recording of her new work, O’Magnum Mysterium. She has premiered numerous works by composers in both the USA and China, including works for solo flute/piccolo and piano, as well as chamber and orchestral works.

Ms. Wintringham held faculty positions at the Eastman Community Music School from 2014-2017, where she served as the Director of the New Horizons (NH) Flute Ensemble, and as the NH Flute Mentor. She also served as guest artist in residency at the Xinghai Conservatory of Music. Active as a music educator, she further served as the Music Director for the Chinese School of Rochester’s youth choir. She held several teaching assistantships during her studies, including positions at the University of Wyoming and the Xinghai Conservatory of Music. Wintringham holds a Master of Music Performance degree from Arizona State University, where she studied under renowned flutist Dr. Elizabeth Buck. Additionally, she holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Xinghai Conservatory of Music in Guangzhou, China, and a Performance Certificate from the University of Wyoming. Her primary teachers include Dr. Nicole Riner, Qi Yan, and Tongde Zhu. She has performed in numerous master classes for many renowned flutists including Peter-Lukas Graf, Pierre-Yves Artaud, Bonita Boyd, Richard Sherman, Eugenia Zukerman and Michel Bellavance.
