Biography

Dylan James is a freelance clarinetist and clarinet instructor based in Manhattan. He has performed nationally with various orchestras and ensembles, notably including a sold-out performance with Yo-Yo Ma and The Silk Road Ensemble at the Chautauqua Amphitheater in August 2018. He has participated in festivals including Chautauqua Institution Music Festival, Miami Music Festival, National Music Festival, National Symphony Orchestra Summer Music Institute, and Northern Lights Music Festival. Twice a winner of the Rowan Soloists’ Competition, Dylan has performed as soloist with the Rowan University Wind Ensemble and the Rowan University Orchestra, in addition to the Rowan University String Ensemble, Northern Lights Festival Orchestra, and the Philharmonic of Southern New Jersey, with whom he is currently a member of the clarinet section. Dylan is a past winner of the Clifton Foundation’s Emerging Artist Award and was also honored with an Undergraduate Scholar Award through the Presser Foundation. He is a member of the national music Honor Society Pi Kappa Lambda.

Originally from Mullica Hill, NJ, Dylan graduated summa cum laude from Rowan University with a Bachelor of Music degree. Upon graduation he was awarded the Ann B. Ward Medallion for highest distinction in Fine and Performing Arts. He has also completed graduate coursework at Mannes School of Music in New York City, where he currently resides. Dylan is a former member of Philadelphia Sinfonia as well as a past student of Settlement Music School, where he studied woodwind chamber music with Shirley Curtiss. His principal teachers include Rié Suzuki and Charles Neidich.
