Biography

Mr. McKenzie has had a long and varied career as a music educator, minister of music, voice teacher, performer and musical theatre director. He is a graduate of Westminster Choir College in Princeton, NJ (BMEd/Voice), and a magna cum laude graduate of Indiana University in Bloomington, IN (MMVoice).

Prior to his appointment at Rowan, Mr. McKenzie served for 11 years as Director of Choral Activities at Overbrook High School in Pine Hill, NJ. He built the program at Overbrook from 29 students to 193, including 75 men. His ensembles have consistently earned Superior ratings in numerous music festivals. Mr. McKenzie conducted the 2009 NJ All-State Women's Chorus, the 2009 NJ Region III Mixed Chorus, and the 2013 NJ All-State Mixed Chorus.

Mr. McKenzie studied choral conducting with Robert Simpson and Robert Carwithen, and sang in the Westminster Choir. While at Westminster he also toured under the direction of Roger Wagner. He has performed in concerts, recitals, operas and oratorios throughout the United States and in Spoleto, Italy.

Mr. McKenzie studied voice with Metropolitan Opera singers Margaret Harshaw and Nicola Rossi-Lemeni while at Indiana University. He has maintained a private vocal studio for many years. As Minister of Music, he served for 10 years in churches in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

As a director, vocal director, conductor and performer, Mr. McKenzie has over a hundred musical theatre credits. He has also served as accompanist for many years for solo recitals and choral concerts. Mr. McKenzie has presented at both NAfME and ACDA events. He has served as President of South Jersey Choral Directors Association and also on the All-State Choral Procedures Committee.
