Biography

Dr. Matt Walley joined the faculty as the Adjunct Professor of Trombone at Rowan University in the Fall of 2022. In addition to teaching at Rowan, he is the Low Brass Instructor at the Lucy Moses School and the Special Music School in New York City and the Program Coordinator for The Orchestra Now at Bard College. 

As an active musician, Dr. Walley has performed with orchestras and ensembles including the Grafenegg Academy, Edison, Adelphi Orchestras, the Light Opera of New Jersey, the Mid-Atlantic Opera Orchestra, the Garden State Philharmonic, and the Atlantic Brass Band. As a soloist, he has been featured by the Brevard Symphonic Winds, Brevard Sinfonia, Rutgers Wind Ensemble, Atlantic Brass Band, and the American Trombone Workshop. He has recorded multiple albums with The Orchestra Now for Hyperion, Naxos, and Bridge Records that have been broadcast on WMHT 89.1, WQXR 105.9, and BBC Radio 4. His performances have also been broadcast through the MetArts Live from the Metropolitan Museum of Arts.

Outside of the concert hall, he has given masterclasses at Rutgers University, the University of Georgia, Auburn University, Furman State University, North Greenville University and to the Antofagasta Symphony, Chile. Additionally, since 2017 he has been a co-editor of the Orchestral Sectional column in the ITA Journal, first with Weston Sprott and currently with Megumi Kanda. Through this column, he has created articles on topics ranging from audition prep to the inner workings of a professional trombone section, collaborating with world-class artists to bring educational material to as many individuals as possible.

Dr. Walley holds a D.M.A. in Trombone Performance and Wind Band Conducting from Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey  where he studied with Weston Sprott and Michael Powell, an M.M. in Trombone Performance from the University of Georgia  where he studied with Dr. Joshua Bynum, an M.M. in Curatorial, Critical and Performance Studies from Bard College,  and a B.A. in Trombone Performance and Business from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where he studied with Dr. Scott Anderson.
